The Year of the Big Wind
The Year of the Big Wind draws its title from a phrase in Joyce's Ulysses, pointing to a historic windstorm that many believed was the end of the world. Here the doubled atmosphere of wind as meteorological fact and pressure system of history presses against the body, the family, and the self, along California coastlines and into the interior arroyos of New Mexico. This is the pressure system of workplace indignity and the intimate rituals of illness and care, carrying in their syntax both the comedy of bureaucratic language and the weight of what that language cannot hold.
Formally restless, Meng assembles a grieving poetics from instruction manuals, Wikipedia definitions, tax forms, and field guides. The desire for rootedness drives these poems, and with humor and pragmatism, Meng attunes to our various climates of catastrophe and estrangement, where roadrunners are lured into the glyphosate-fattened lawn, and maple trees are tapped until the phloem stops. Strange and beautifully torqued, The Year of the Big Wind insists on uncertainty as our new weather.

This book is the final single-author poetry book in our first book series, which began with Catherine Meng's Tonight's the Night and finishes with Meng'sYear of the Big Wind. So, we have come full circle. . . . Apostrophe Books will publish one more book in this series involving a collaborative project with poetic, pataphysical, and philosophical intersections. . . the final 'E' in Apostroph-E.
